Safety alert from HSE following SKid Steer fatality

HSE issues Skid Steer safety alert

A recent fatality has caused the HSE to issue an alert reminding operators of the importance of observing safety precautions whilst using skid steer machines.

Defective interlock

A defective interlock caused the skid steer’s foot pedals to remain active, despite the restraint bar being raised, resulting in the operator being crushed by the machine’s lift arm. If using a machine of this variety with an interlock directly linked to the hydraulics, raising a restraint bar or arm rest linked to the machine’s hydraulic circuit prevents unintentional operation of the arms and bucket tilt mechanism, providing the foot pedals are returned to neutral. Operators are warned to keep pedals well maintained and to be careful not to inadvertently rest their feet on them to ensure the mechanism can engage.

When using skid steer loaders of this kind, operators are advised to ensure that the pedals are deactivated after raising the restraint bar or arm rest, taking particular care around the danger zone at the front of the machine. Interlocks should be checked on a daily basis and extra care taken in checking the mechanisms, ensuring they are clean, lubricated and operating smoothly. The best way to ensure the safe operation of your skid steer loader is to undergo comprehensive operator training and complete thorough machine maintenance, with reference to the manufacturer’s guidance.
