The HSE have issued a safety alert warning of the dangers of unintended track movement on mobile crushing equipment. Following a recent fatality, during which a worker became trapped as a result of unexpected movement, owners and operatives have been urged to take measures to reduce the risk involved in using crushers.
Electrical Faults
The accident was the result of an electrical fault, caused by a damaged cable. The outer insulation had been compromised through persistent rubbing on the machine's chassis, leaving an exposed area which caused the tracks to move whenever it came in contact with the crusher's metal framework.
Safety Recommendations
In an attempt to reduce the risk of workers being struck/trapped, the HSE have made several safety recommendations. This fault is not limited to the particular make and model of machine involved in the incident; it could apply to any mobile crusher with a similar operating system. Owners/operatives are advised to contact manufacturers or suppliers to enquire whether there is a risk of unintended movement due to this fault on their machine. Raised awareness of the condition/location of cabling may prevent further incidents; care should be taken that the outer sheath cannot be damaged and that cables are routed in safe, secure positions. The importance of regular inspection, alongside safe systems of work and appropriate isolation procedures during maintenance are also emphasised.
