The past ten years have seen a huge increase in awareness of manual handling training and the importance of industry in adopting these standards to protect their workforce and themselves against injuries, sickness and claims. Many suggest that manual handling techniques are 'common sense', but like most common sense, it is only 'common' when you are made aware of it for the first time.
Manual handling injuries are not just limited to one particular industry, they occur in all types of workplaces. The Health and Safety Executive has identified that Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), including manual handling injuries are the most common type of occupational ill health in the UK. In the most recent survey of self-reported work related illnesses published in the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (amended), it was estimated that in 2001/2002, 1.1 million people in Britain suffered from musculoskeletal disorders. This resulted in an estimated 12.3 million working days being lost to business in 2001/2002.
It is, the employer's responsibility to assess the risk of MSD injuries in the workplace and to try to reduce and avoid the need for hazardous manual handling so far as reasonably practicable. Employees should be made aware of the potential risks that face them in the workplace and encouragement should be given to them to report any areas where they feel improvements could be made.
