To comply with health and safety legislation it is vital that fork lift truck training is conducted according to Health & Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines and by accredited training providers. The first Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) was published in 1988 and for the first time provided users and trainers of fork lift trucks with a training framework. This guidance (L117) was updated and reissued in 1999 and this version is still current today.
To be accredited, fork lift truck training must be conducted by an organisation recognised by one of the Health & Safety Commission (HSC) appointed accrediting bodies. Without this industry standard companies cannot be sure that their employees are getting the correct training.
It is recommended that employers familiarise themselves with the Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) for Rider Operated Lift Trucks: Operator Training. This outlines their responsibility to ensure their employees are adequately trained to an accredited standard on the equipment that they are expected to use. Within this guide, the importance of employers keeping records of each employee's skills and training is laid down. An employer must keep an up to date record of its employees training including copy certificates not only for Health and safety issues but also to aid the process of organising refresher training.
Mentor has recently invested in a new computerised database system that holds training records for at least seven years. This facilitates companies in their training issues, allowing companies to request copy certificates, obtain confirmation that a newly employed operator is certificated to use a piece of equipment and even request reports of who has been trained for them by Mentor.
Mentor Training has grown over the years to become the largest fork lift truck training provider within the UK. With over 115 nationwide instructors, Mentor Training is in a position to offer excellent availability for all training requirements wherever an operation is based. The courses are carried out professionally and to high standards ensuring that operators receive the best available training
Depending on the level of operator experience, Mentor can offer a training package to suit. Courses can be 1, 3 or 5 days and the operators can be mixed and matched to achieve maximum value for money.
