The rapid increase in access platform training can be directly attributed to the increase in use of access platforms in almost all sectors of the economy. This is in part due to increasing legislation (Working at Height Regulations) but also to the fact that access platforms are a much more attractive commercial option as their price has fallen and availability increased. Today access platforms are being used extensively in construction, manufacturing and service industries and it is highly likely that this rise will continue for a number of years.
Mentor provides access platform training to IPAF standards at any location in the UK. This includes training on scissor, boom and vehicle mounted platforms. The courses are designed to provide delegates with all of the necessary skills for operating mobile elevating working platforms in a safe work environment.
It is the employer's responsibility under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER 98) to ensure that all persons who use work equipment have received adequate training in the safe use of that equipment. Any person using a Work Platform must be adequately trained and tested to an accredited standard.
Mentor Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) courses are normally conducted on the customer site, this allows the instructor to see where the equipment is used and direct the theoretical and practical training accordingly. Each delegate will be trained to a high standard and each will receive a certificate to prove their competence on the equipment after successfully completing a practical and theoretical assessment. Training courses are available nationwide and can be run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to fit in with the ideal requirements of the customer.
Prior to training, it is important to note that it is the customer's responsibility to ensure that the machine to be trained on has a current LOLER certificate and that Personal Protective Equipment such as harnesses, lanyards and safety helmets are supplied for all delegates attending a course. Without the above the instructor will be unable to conduct the course.
Once training is complete, the employer should keep a copy of all documentation relevant to operators' skills and training. Regular supervision and inspections should be put in place to monitor the performance of the operator and assess when a refresher retest is desirable (this is normally every 3 to 5 years).
Courses are normally completed within 1 day.
